OpenAI Expands Educational Tools with Free Course and Study Mode

OpenAI has launched new initiatives aimed at supporting educators and enhancing student learning experiences across primary, secondary, and higher education. As artificial intelligence becomes more present in academic environments, OpenAI is celebrating the essential role of teachers while introducing tools designed to foster active participation, critical thinking, and structured lesson planning.

The campaign highlights how effective questioning changes the trajectory of a lesson. By surfacing unspoken doubts, encouraging alternative problem-solving techniques, and validating existing student knowledge, educators guide learners from initial practice to comprehensive understanding.

AI for Educators Course Launches on OpenAI Academy

To help teachers integrate artificial intelligence into their daily workflows, OpenAI launched the AI for Educators course in Brazilian Portuguese on OpenAI Academy, its free learning platform. The training module is designed for teachers across all educational tiers, offering practical guidance on leveraging technology without sacrificing pedagogical judgment.

Key areas covered in the course include:

  • Lesson Planning: Structuring curriculum materials and classroom activities efficiently.
  • Assessment Creation: Designing quizzes, assignments, and check-in tasks tailored to student needs.
  • Classroom Communication: Streamlining updates and administrative communications for parents and school administration.
  • Preserving Pedagogical Authority: Ensuring that teachers maintain full creative and professional control over instruction.

Guided Learning with ChatGPT Study Mode

Alongside the training course, OpenAI introduced Study Mode, a feature integrated into ChatGPT that helps students explore subjects step by step. Developed in collaboration with educators, cognitive scientists, and pedagogy experts, Study Mode shifts interaction away from passive answers toward reflection and active inquiry.

To activate the feature, users select Study from the tools menu within ChatGPT. Instead of generating immediate summary answers, Study Mode delivers interactive hints, targeted questions, explanations, and checks for understanding.

Practical Applications in the Classroom

Study Mode offers practical utility for both individual study and teacher-led classroom instruction:

  • Targeted Subject Review: A biology student preparing for an exam on enzymes can prompt the tool to ask one question at a time, pause for a response, and pinpoint specific topics requiring further review.
  • Teacher Evaluation: Educators can test Study Mode within their specific subject areas to evaluate whether the prompt structures promote genuine reasoning and present age-appropriate explanations.
  • Classroom Investigation Exercises: In a science unit on evaporation, a teacher might ask students to investigate why clothes dry on a clothesline. After exploring the concept using Study Mode, students write their own explanations and discussion questions independently without referencing the chat transcript. The teacher then reviews these written responses to identify concepts that require whole-class re-teaching.

Empowering Teachers in the Age of Technology

While digital platforms provide new pathways for academic exploration, technology serves as an assistant rather than a replacement for classroom instruction. Educators possess the unique ability to understand their students, ask pivotal questions, and convert natural curiosity into lasting knowledge.
